Laramie, Wyo. - Coming to the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources and Engineering College are Graduate and Undergraduate Nuclear Certificate Programs which "aim to prepare UW students for nuclear energy careers."

Caleb Hill, Co-Director for the Nuclear Energy Research Center (NERC) says that the idea began because of a spike in nuclear activity in the state, specifically naming the TerraPower nuclear plant in Kemmerer, Wy. as a big influence, and he wants students to stay in state.

Hill says, "the last thing I want to see is for this industry to fire up in the state and then import all of their employees from else where."

The Nuclear Certificate Programs are "mostly for those in technical degrees like Engineering" says hill, as there are "core courses that cover the baseline aspects of nuclear energy."

According to hill," things are still being worked out as of now they are seeing how things progress," but hopes are in the future is this program branches into more meaningful work.

Hill adds, "having more kind of opportunities for particularly graduate students but undergraduate students as well to participate on nuclear focused research projects."

Hill also states that the program has been set up in this way "as a certificate so it can be a stand-alone credential" and that the program is slated to begin Fall 2025, as students can already enroll.
